Neil Young Offers Free Access to Music for Greenland Residents
Neil Young, the well-known Canadian singer-songwriter, has announced that he will provide free access to his entire music catalog for people living in Greenland. This decision comes amid his criticisms of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, and former President Donald Trump.
This move follows pressure from Trump regarding Greenland’s geopolitical significance, where he mentioned the possibility of imposing tariffs on the territory, which is part of Denmark and a NATO ally.
On his website, Young extended this unique offer, stating:
We are proud to offer one year of free access to neilyoungarchives.com to all of our Greenlandic friends. I hope that my music and music films can help alleviate some of the unwarranted stress and threats you are experiencing from an unpopular and hopefully temporary government.
I sincerely hope that you can enjoy all of my music in the highest quality in my beautiful Greenlandic home. This is an offer of peace and love.
He emphasized that this offer covers “all the music I’ve made over the last 62 years.” Moreover, he added, “You can renew for free as long as you are in Greenland. We hope other organizations will follow in the spirit of our example. Love the Earth, Neil.”
This isn’t the first instance where Young has engaged in political discussions. Recently, he criticized Amazon and Jeff Bezos, linking them to Trump’s administration dismissively.
Last fall, Young announced plans to remove his discography from Amazon Music. During this criticism, he expressed:
Amazon is owned by Jeff Bezos, a billionaire who supports the president. The president’s international policies and support for ICE make it impossible for me to ignore his actions. If you feel like me, I highly recommend not using Amazon. There are many ways to avoid Amazon and support individual Americans and American companies that supply the same products.
Unfortunately, my position is detrimental to record companies in the short term, but I think the message I’m sending is important and clear.
Thank you for purchasing music from a local or independent digital service.
In addition, he has openly critiqued ICE and its policies, noting concerns regarding political figures within the administration. This continuous activism marks a significant engagement for Young in current socio-political issues.
