Walz Criticizes Trump’s Immigration Tactics as “Un-American”
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has taken a strong stance against President Donald Trump’s approach to immigration enforcement, labeling it “un-American” in a recent op-ed published in the Wall Street Journal. He addressed the administration’s claims and the impact of its tactics on the state.
In his editorial titled “Non-U.S. Forces Attack on Minnesota,” Walz stated that the administration’s actions have escalated beyond mere immigration enforcement, describing it as a systemic brutality against Minnesota residents. He contended that this is neither just nor legal and emphasized it does not contribute to safety.
This editorial coincides with the aftermath of a mass shooting in Minneapolis, during which Border Patrol agents shot and killed an individual named Alex Preti during an immigration raid.
Walz pointed out that while many agree on the need for enforcing immigration laws, the reality in Minnesota is starkly different. In recent weeks, he described incidents where undercover agents allegedly engaged in inappropriate actions, such as separating children from their parents and conducting raids without warrants, often in dangerous conditions.
He specifically criticized ICE’s claims regarding noncitizen arrests in Minneapolis. Walz noted that a tweet from ICE suggested a failure by Cottonwood County to hold detainees for suspected offenders, which he claimed was misleading. According to Walz, the county sheriff had followed protocol, but ICE’s focus was on operations in the Twin Cities instead.
In response, White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson asserted that Trump aims to collaborate with local leaders to remove serious criminals from society, stating that ICE has arrested various offenders despite opposition from Minnesota’s Democratic leaders. She encouraged cooperation instead of conflict.
Walz continued with his criticism of ICE’s methods, urging Trump to reconsider his tactics during this tumultuous time. He described the current immigration enforcement as chaotic and unproductive, stating, “This attack on our community is not what we need.” He believes there are better ways to ensure safety without resorting to violence and disorder.
Despite the tense environment, Walz observed that the protests in response to these issues have been peaceful. He reiterated the importance of maintaining a law enforcement approach that aligns with community values, advocating for a humane immigration enforcement system moving forward.
In a recent communication, Trump indicated he had engaged in constructive discussions with Walz and expressed a willingness to work cooperatively on these issues. The president noted their mutual understanding and shared objective of addressing crime effectively in Minnesota.
