New Tool for Transparency in School Immigration Policies

As schools across the nation increasingly resist cooperation with ICE and immigration enforcement, a national educational watchdog group has introduced a tool designed to help parents better understand how their children’s schools are handling these issues.

The report from Defending Education reveals a national database that includes K-12 school districts that have implemented “sanctuary,” “safe haven,” or immigration-related policies intended to limit collaboration with federal authorities. This list, updated regularly, covers over 700 districts across 33 states and Washington, D.C. It features districts that have made formal resolutions, provided guidance to faculty, or established policies on how to deal with federal requests for access to schools.

Erika Sange, a senior communications director for Defending Education, expressed concern, stating, “When school districts resist or obstruct federal law enforcement, they are playing a dangerous game.”

Some critics argue that it’s complicated. Yes, schools should be concerned about the welfare of students and their families regarding immigration status, but they should also be cautious about branding themselves as sanctuaries, as this may unintentionally shield families with violent histories from federal action.

This new database allows parents to search by state and district, providing direct links to resolutions and policy documents. This way, families can read the actual language instead of relying solely on district summaries or statements.

The list highlights districts from both liberal states like California and Illinois, and conservative states such as Texas and Arizona, reflecting the divide in how immigration issues are approached nationally.

Recently, anti-ICE protests have erupted across the country. Students have participated in multiple demonstrations, including one in Phoenix where hundreds staged a walkout. In Minnesota, students are rallying at the state Capitol, coinciding with school closures due to fears of ICE raids. Moreover, it was reported that a St. Paul School Board member and activist faced arrest for an unrelated incident.
