Trump Credits Rubio’s Diplomacy Skills
President Donald Trump has highlighted Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s role in shaping his diplomatic approach, particularly as Rubio’s influence has grown in the current Trump administration.
Trump shared a story about his interactions with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He recalled how Xi requested that he refrain from using the term “Chinese virus” when referring to COVID-19, to which Trump agreed. “The reason I chose to do that is, why should there be a problem with that?” Trump explained.
During his speech, Borge Brende, the president and CEO of the World Economic Forum, remarked on Trump’s newfound diplomatic prowess.
Trump elaborated on how he learned about diplomacy from Rubio, saying, “I became a diplomat for the first time. Well, Marco Rubio taught me that. He said, ‘Let me teach you about diplomacy.'” Beyond leading the State Department, Rubio also serves as the national security adviser and director of the National Archives, making him a pivotal figure in the administration.
Matthew Kroenig, a former Pentagon official, praised Rubio’s abilities, stating that he effectively supports Trump while maintaining a constructive direction in his role.
Rubio, whose parents immigrated from Cuba, has gained prominence in shaping the administration’s foreign policy, especially following the U.S. military offensive in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of dictator Nicolás Maduro. Historically, Rubio has advocated for a tougher stance against Maduro, having previously pushed for his ousting through sanctions and supporting opposition leader Juan Guaidó.
Rubio had expressed confidence in Maduro’s eventual downfall, although he acknowledged uncertainty about the timeline. “He chose a fight he couldn’t win,” Rubio noted. “It’s just a matter of time.”
Following Maduro’s capture, Trump announced intentions for the U.S. to “govern” Venezuela until a stable transition could occur. This decision has sparked debate among Democrats regarding its legality, as it was executed without Congressional consent. However, Rubio defended the operation, asserting it did not qualify as an “invasion.”
As they spoke in Switzerland, Trump suggested that Rubio might be recognized as one of the best secretaries of state ever, referencing the unanimous Senate confirmation he received in January 2025. “Any guy who gets approved with 100% of the votes is fine,” Trump remarked, reflecting on the bipartisan support Rubio received. Initially doubtful of Rubio’s nomination, Trump now seems to think the Democrats might reconsider their support based on Rubio’s performance.
