Community Mourns Former NYPD Officer
The community in New York City is grieving the loss of a former NYPD officer who reportedly passed away from a heart attack while clearing snow during last weekend’s severe winter storm.
Sixty-year-old ex-NYPD sergeant Roger McGovern collapsed on Sunday while shoveling snow at Our Lady of Victory Church in Floral Park, Long Island. A friend, Kevin Troy, shared that McGovern had a seizure at the church, and by the time they arrived at the hospital, he was already gone.
It’s heartbreaking. McGovern had walked a mile in the bone-chilling cold to ensure parishioners could attend Mass at the church, where he served as both an usher and a member of the Knights of Columbus. According to CBS2, he had spoken to the priest about shoveling the sidewalk to welcome attendees but collapsed before he could even begin.
Tragically, it was during this act of goodwill that he suffered the heart attack.
The Sergeant’s Benevolent Association expressed sorrow, stating, “After a lifetime of service to this city, Sergeant McGovern passed away while assisting the community during a recent snowstorm. His dedication to others did not end with his retirement.” McGovern had retired from the NYPD back in 2008, as confirmed by the city.
As for the church, they haven’t released any public comment so far.
This past weekend, the icy conditions have claimed a toll; city officials report that eight people have died in New York City alone due to the storm, which left 8 to 15 inches of snow in some regions. Nationally, a total of 36 fatalities have been recorded across 14 states related to this storm system. It seems quite overwhelming, doesn’t it? Nature can be so unforgiving sometimes.
