Trump Critiques Firearm Possession in Deadly ICE Confrontation
President Donald Trump expressed disapproval on Tuesday regarding Alex Preti’s decision to carry a firearm during a fatal encounter with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Preti, 37, was shot and killed by Border Patrol agents during a confrontation in Minneapolis over the weekend. Following the incident, Trump administration officials faced backlash, with some critics labeling Preti as a “domestic terrorist.” When asked about these comments, Trump mentioned he hadn’t heard them and chose not to comment further.
“I haven’t heard that. But of course, he shouldn’t have had a gun. And to be honest, everyone here considers this a very unfortunate incident, right? Unless, of course, you’re, well, not thinking clearly. A very, very unfortunate incident,” Trump stated.
He further condemned Preti’s choice to be armed during the encounter, noting that it was “very bad” to have two loaded magazines as well.
Protests and riots erupted throughout Minnesota following the deaths of Preti and another individual, Renee Good. Democratic leaders such as Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey have urged federal immigration authorities to withdraw entirely from the area.
In light of the ongoing unrest, Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino is set to depart Minnesota. Meanwhile, President Trump dispatched Border Patrol Agent Tom Homan to manage ICE operations in the state and assist with investigations related to what authorities described as widespread fraud.
