Tragic Incident Claims Lives of Three Siblings in Texas
Three young siblings lost their lives after falling into a frozen pond during a winter storm in Texas. Authorities and family members reported that one child encountered danger, prompting the others to jump in to assist.
The victims—three brothers, aged 6, 8, and 9—became trapped in an icy pond located in Bonham, a small city about 90 miles northeast of Dallas. Their mothers and neighbors made desperate attempts to save them.
Relatives shared with local news that the youngest brother, Howard, was the first to go under the ice, followed by his older siblings trying to help, as described by their mother, Cheyenne Hungaman.
She recounted, “I rushed towards the pond and jumped in, trying to save them while also fighting to keep myself afloat. It was hopeless once I was in.” A local high school football coach also made a brave effort to rescue the boys.
Ultimately, the boys’ mother had to be pulled from the water by a neighbor. “There were three of them and only me, and I couldn’t save anyone,” she said, overwhelmed with grief.
Emergency responders managed to retrieve the 8-year-old and 9-year-old from the pond, but, tragically, they did not survive despite being taken to the hospital. The youngest brother was never recovered alive, with his body found later after a thorough search of the area.
As Hungaman reflects on her devastating loss, she cherishes the distinct personalities of her sons. “EJ, the oldest, was all about soccer and haircuts. Caleb had the biggest heart, and Howard—he was just a bundle of joy, always the first to dive in,” she shared.
Dr. Lance Hamlin, Superintendent of Bonham Independent School District, expressed sorrow over what he called an “unimaginable loss,” stating the community is working to support grieving families. “Our hearts are heavy with the news of these children,” he noted.
This incident marks the second tragedy in North Texas linked to the winter storm; just a day earlier, a 16-year-old girl succumbed to injuries from a sledding accident.
Authorities are looking into both incidents amid warnings about hazardous road conditions caused by the storm, which blanketed much of the area in ice and snow.
