Governor DeSantis promises to dismiss Florida officials who do not comply with immigration laws

DeSantis’ Stance on Immigration Enforcement in Florida

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently spoke with Fox News, emphasizing that state officials in Florida might face removal from their positions if they behave like Minnesota’s leadership did during the Trump administration’s approach to immigration enforcement.

He pointed out that Florida law mandates all state and local law enforcement agencies to collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In his words, “If you act like Jacob Frey in the state of Florida, you will be removed from your job,” he stated in an interview on “The Ingraham Angle.”

“The reason I put that requirement in place is that there are some sheriffs who are willing to do this,” DeSantis explained. “Some cities and mayors don’t want to do that.” He drew a clear contrast between Florida’s firm approach and the resistance from Democratic leaders in Minnesota, mentioning Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.

DeSantis accused Minnesota’s politicians of not cooperating with federal immigration authorities, saying, “You’re literally going to have a criminal alien going to prison for violating Minnesota law, and they still don’t want you to cooperate and send that person to the Department of State to be released.” He described the actions of Walz and Frey as “very harmful.”

He raised questions about the implications of states with differing political views opting out of federal mandates, suggesting, “If you have states that have different political leanings and can opt out themselves and disrupt the work that is being done, then what are we doing here?”

While tensions seem to have eased somewhat between Minnesota leadership and the Trump administration following the appointment of “border czar” Tom Homan, DeSantis continued to criticize those financing protests in Minnesota. He asserted that the protests reflect an organized effort funded by specific groups instigated by politicians aiming to obstruct legal enforcement.

Moreover, DeSantis acknowledged that immigration enforcement tactics may need a closer look, especially in light of the tragic shootings of Renee Good and Alex Preti, both killed by federal agents. He urged for empathy towards law enforcement officers who operate in challenging situations, recognizing the need for accountability alongside an understanding of the threats they face.

He concluded by emphasizing the necessity of holding police officers to high standards but also reminded everyone that these officers encounter significant risks in their line of work, suggesting a balance of accountability with empathy.
