Man charged with assaulting Rep. Ilhan Omar at town hall has a criminal history

The individual accused of assaulting Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) has a prior criminal background, as revealed by records obtained by a news outlet. During a City Hall meeting hosted by Omar on Tuesday, a man, later identified as 55-year-old Anthony James Kazmierczak, allegedly sprayed an unknown, foul-smelling substance at lawmakers. He has since been charged with third-degree assault and is currently held in the Hennepin County Jail.

Despite the chaotic scene, Omar remained at City Hall, urging those around her to stay strong. “Don’t let them put on a show,” she declared. “We’re going to keep going! These bastards aren’t going to let this go on.”

Kazmierczak has previous convictions for driving under the influence from 2009 and 2010. According to the records, he served a day in jail and completed five years of supervised probation for the later offense, plus 30 days of home detention related to the earlier one.

Interestingly, just days before the incident, Kazmierczak sent a text to his neighbor, Brian Kelly, mentioning that he might need someone to watch his dog while attending Omar’s event. He even hinted at the possibility of getting arrested. “He said, ‘I’m going to do the Omar thing.’ What is that? He described it as the City Hall thing,” Kelly recalled. “I thought it was nonsense; he wasn’t going to do anything stupid.”

During the City Hall event, Omar criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), labeling it a “rogue agency” and highlighting its violent actions. “ICE shoots people in broad daylight, assaults young people, and gases peaceful protesters,” she exclaimed. Omar emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “We cannot treat this as business as usual.”

Moreover, she called for either the resignation or impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, insisting, “It’s crucial I continue to lead with my Democratic colleagues.”
