If you’re a beer lover getting ready for this year’s NFL Championship, brace yourself for something unusual: a beer crafted using black bear feces is set to debut at next month’s Super Bowl LX. This might actually be a first in the history of bottled beverages.
The beer, cleverly named “Nature’s Call,” is a collaboration between Columbia Sportswear from Portland, Oregon, and Breakside Brewing.
“When we say designed for anything, we mean anything,” said Joe Boyle, Columbia’s brand president, reflecting a playful enthusiasm for the product.
“When Mother Nature throws bear poop at us, we ferment it into cold beer. From the bear’s body to your mouth, we make nature’s poop easier to swallow,” he added, which is quite a statement in itself.
The goal here is to “make it easier to enjoy the most fascinating parts of nature,” according to Columbia.
This creation boasts a natural process. The company collected droppings from black bears in the forest, which were then sent to Breakside Brewing. From there, the fecal matter enters the brewing process, resulting in a lager.
But don’t worry too much about the taste of the beer; some descriptions suggest it has been described as “delicious” with hints of “huckleberry and honey aromas.” Now that’s something to consider.
Nature’s Call will be available at the Columbia booth during The Players Tailgate at Levi Stadium ahead of the Super Bowl on February 8, and can also be found at various Breakside breweries throughout Oregon.
If you come across this drink, the can will certainly catch your eye. It features an illustration of a hefty black bear leaving behind a, well, rather ample pile that symbolizes what will soon transform into beer.
Interestingly, bear-themed beverages appear to be rising in popularity. For instance, earlier this month, The Proper Restaurant and Bar introduced the “Yellow 2120” cocktail to honor a 550-pound brown bear that made headlines after lurking in an Altadena home for 37 days. This drink, however, didn’t include any animal waste.
