Pro Football Hall of Fame Issues Statement on Belichick’s Nomination

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has addressed recent concerns.

While there’s no intention to disrespect Bill Belichick directly, the Hall made it clear on Wednesday night that, as reported by ESPN, he won’t be selected in his first year on the ballot.

Although the statement didn’t specifically name Belichick or comment directly on the backlash that followed, the Hall emphasized that it would take action against voters who breach its regulations.

“The Pro Football Hall of Fame recognizes and respects the passionate responses from fans, media, and members within the Hall, especially following the reports regarding the Class of 2026 voting results. That enthusiasm is what fuels the game. The Hall also appreciates the selection committee members who adhere to the established bylaws. Serving on this committee is an honor,” the statement read.

“Each year, we review the selection process and the structure of the 50-person committee. If it’s found that a member has violated the selection rules, then action will be taken, potentially including removal from the committee. Selecting a new class is crucial, and we must maintain the integrity of that process.”

Details about which bylaws may have been breached remain unclear, as the official results were not meant to be released until the NFL Honors ceremony on February 5th.

However, following the report about Belichick’s exclusion, there was significant outcry from the football community, including comments from Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes and Hall of Fame coach Jimmie Johnson.

The total votes cast remain somewhat ambiguous, but it’s understood that Belichick didn’t meet the required 80 percent (40 out of 50 votes) necessary for induction in 2026.

Notably, Kansas City Star columnist Virhe Gregorian mentioned on Wednesday that he opted not to vote for Belichick. He clarified that his decision had nothing to do with previous controversies surrounding the coach, like Spygate or Deflategate. Instead, Gregorian pointed out that the votes for candidates like Ken Anderson, Roger Craig, and LC Greenwood were influenced by peculiar selection dynamics involving coaches, contributors, and senior members.

Still, he acknowledged that Belichick rightfully deserves this honor and believes that his selection is, well, “inevitable.”
