United Airlines and American Airlines are in a competitive race at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, each stepping up their game as the summer travel season approaches.
On Tuesday, United announced it would run a record 750 flights a day at O’Hare this summer, which is about 200 more flights than its closest rival and marks the largest flight schedule ever at that airport.
The airline plans to offer nonstop service to 222 destinations by 2026, which includes 38 more than American Airlines. Notably, United’s service will cover 47 international locations across Europe, Asia, and South America, in addition to 175 destinations within the U.S.
Beginning in April, United will enhance its Midwest connectivity with five new routes from Chicago to areas such as Champaign-Urbana, Illinois; Kalamazoo and Lansing in Michigan; La Crosse, Wisconsin; and Bloomington-Normal, Illinois.
United is also increasing service to over 80 cities from Chicago to provide travelers with more choices. This includes popular destinations like Boston, Nashville, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Dallas, positioning its Chicago hub as the third-largest for U.S. airlines.
Omar Idris, vice president of O’Hare at United, mentioned that the airline has spent the past decade building brand loyalty by focusing on value, and this expansion reflects their commitment to the city and its residents.
Just days prior to United’s announcement, American Airlines revealed plans for new routes from its Chicago hub, including winter service to Maui/Kahului, Hawaii, along with new flights to Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Columbia, South Carolina.
American is also increasing its operations from its Los Angeles hub but is particularly keen on enhancing services in Chicago, a city integral to its history since the 1920s. Recently, Chicago’s network has expanded significantly, providing access to over 180 destinations.
In the past year alone, it has added 29 new destinations from Chicago, which includes places like Naples, Italy, and St. Martin.
Furthermore, American plans to have over 500 daily departures during peak travel times as spring break approaches, indicating a robust competitive presence in the Chicago market.
