Celebrities remain in the US following years of intentions to leave during Trump's presidency.

Almost ten years since Donald Trump first took office, some celebrities who claimed they would leave the United States if he won still remain. It’s interesting, isn’t it? Since 2016, many Hollywood figures have made statements about leaving, and these threats have come up again as Trump gears up for the 2024 election.

Take Sharon Stone, for example. In July, she mentioned to the Daily Mail that she was thinking about moving to Italy if Trump were to return. “We are certainly considering a house in Italy,” she said. “I think this is a smart idea at this point. This is the first time in my life that I’ve actually seen someone run for office on a platform of hatred and oppression,” she stated.

Meanwhile, comedian Bill Maher recently suggested that Democrats should tell celebrities to “shut up.”

In 2023, Cher told the Guardian that, “I almost got an ulcer last time. [Trump] might really get in again. Who knows? If he does, I’m leaving.” Barbra Streisand has also talked about leaving multiple times over the years, stating, “If he becomes president, I can’t live in this country,” mentioning that she might move to the UK. Back in 2016, she had even suggested Canada or Australia.

Other stars have joked about their intentions to leave, yet they still choose to stay in the U.S. Bruce Springsteen, who supported Biden in the last election, also said back in 2020 that he would consider moving to Australia if Trump won.

Springsteen humorously added, “If Trump is re-elected—which he won’t be, but if he somehow manages it, I’ll see you on the next flight.” Bryan Cranston expressed a similar sentiment on a podcast in 2016, stating, “Obviously, I’m definitely going to move. It’s unrealistic for me that that would happen. I hope to God it doesn’t.”

Miley Cyrus, on the other hand, used harsher words back in 2016, threatening to leave. She once posted on Instagram, expressing her frustration: “If this is my president, I’m going to move! I don’t say what I don’t mean!” Yet, she later backtracked on those comments, explaining in 2017 that she had “no intention of abandoning” her country.

As of 2026, it seems most of these celebrities are still sticking around. While a few have indeed moved abroad, their reasons aren’t solely about Trump’s presidency. It’s a complex mix of personal circumstances and the current political landscape.
