Concerns Over Discrimination Against Christian Advertising
Many young people these days are often caught up in TikTok trends or endlessly scrolling through Google. However, recent developments from TruPlay, a Christian digital media company that creates educational Bible games and related content, have raised concerns that go beyond just potential intellectual impacts.
In a detailed letter addressed to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, TruPlay Games reported that Google has begun refusing their ads as of 2023, citing “religious beliefs against personalized advertising.” While TruPlay views this as a form of discrimination, Jordan Sekulow, executive director of the American Center for Law and Justice, emphasized that TruPlay’s ads do not target audiences based on religion, asserting they simply promote Christian gaming content to a wider audience interested in family-friendly entertainment.
Moreover, TruPlay’s worries extend beyond Google. They noted that TikTok has also declined to run their ads, particularly those featuring cartoon images of Jesus. According to the researchers, “The mere presence of a picture of Jesus was enough to ban the ad.” After numerous rejections, TikTok escalated matters by permanently suspending TruPlay’s ad account for alleged “repeated violations” of its advertising criteria.
This suppression of Christian-themed content across various social media platforms has left many Christians troubled. Some of the top ads that were rejected include:
- “Turn game time into divine time”
- “Christian games for children”
- “Safe Bible Games for Kids.”
Google, in response, pointed out that “these decisions are not made by human operators, but by automated systems.” TruPlay argues, however, that the real issue is that not only are they censoring Christian content, but violent and sexual material is still being approved.
As the ACLJ continues to advocate for Christian rights within corporate frameworks, families are encouraged to show their support for faith-based content in everyday life. According to ACLJ, “Religious freedom is undermined when religious groups are unable to reach audiences through the dominant communication channels of modern society.”
