Cleveland Browns in Power Struggle Over Coaching Decisions

Things in Cleveland are taking an unusual turn as the Browns seem to be experiencing tension between general manager Andrew Berry and owner Jimmy Haslam.

Following a challenging head coach search, the team opted for Todd Monken, who previously served as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator. However, Browns reporter and ESPN radio host Tony Grossi claims Haslam disregarded the advice of the search panel.

“This indicates that Haslam was never fully on board,” Grossi commented on his Cleveland radio show. It appears he went against the search committee’s leadership and Berry’s suggestions. “You have to wonder about Andrew Berry’s future. It really hinges on Haslam’s decisions,” he added.

Interestingly, three candidates pulled out of the coaching race, which has led to speculation that the Browns are requiring interviews to involve written essays and personality assessments. Initially, it seemed that any head coach would need to retain defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz—who is also a candidate—on staff. Nevertheless, Schwartz reportedly expressed frustration about not securing the position and said farewell within the organization.

“Is Schwartz still the DC? That would clarify things,” Grossi remarked, mentioning the complications Monken’s hiring brings. “Without a clear hierarchy, it complicates the offensive and defensive coordinator’s roles.”

Meanwhile, Nate Schielhaas, the Rams’ passing game coordinator and a finalist for the Browns’ head coach position, is likely to return to Los Angeles for next season.

Prior to joining the Browns, Monken was expected to take a job as the offensive coordinator under new Giants coach John Harbaugh. One of his immediate challenges will involve assessing the quarterback situation, which consists of Deshaun Watson, Dillon Gabriel, and Pro Bowl quarterback Shedule Sanders.
