Novartis Launches Prostate Cancer Awareness Campaign with NFL Stars
When Novartis reached out to Delanie Walker, a Pro Bowl tight end, about a new initiative focusing on prostate cancer and screening, they had no idea how relevant the topic would be for him personally.
The campaign, dubbed “Relax Your Tight End,” encourages current and former NFL tight ends—including Walker, Rob Gronkowski, and Tony Gonzalez—to promote the importance of getting blood tests for early detection of prostate cancer.
Walker’s connection to the issue is deeply personal; he lost his father-in-law to the disease, making the request from Novartis feel, well, almost like fate.
“This was personal and very close to my heart,” he shared in an interview. “It allows me to spread awareness and potentially save lives through early detection. I’m all in on this.” He is, understandably, quite passionate about the cause.
Initially, like many younger individuals, he felt hesitant. “It’s a bit uncomfortable, right? I mean, it’s about the rectum,” he admitted.
He recalled how the campaign reassured him: “Just a blood test,” he said. This reassures many who might be apprehensive about getting screened. For someone over 40, like Walker, these conversations can feel less daunting, especially when he knows it’s as straightforward as a blood test.
Furthermore, Walker recognizes the importance of relating to everyday people, which motivates him to support Novartis’s efforts.
“The goal is simple. If people see figures like me participating, they might think, ‘If Delanie Walker did this, maybe I should too.’ We want to show we’re not just athletes; we experience the same health challenges and screening processes.”
To bolster this campaign, Novartis plans to host blood testing events in the Bay Area during Super Bowl week, offering fans exciting prizes like memorabilia and event tickets.
