Police Shoot Armed Teen During Traffic Stop in Santa Ana
On Wednesday night, an 18-year-old named Victor Lopez was shot and killed by police during a traffic stop in Santa Ana. A video that’s making the rounds on social media allegedly shows him raising his arms moments before the gunfire.
Lopez exited his vehicle in the parking lot of the Spectrum Apartments on East 3rd Street while holding a handgun, according to the Santa Ana police.
In the video, Lopez can be seen raising his hands just as multiple gunshots ring out. Officer Natalie Garcia stated that although Lopez had a gun, he dropped it before he could comply with the officers’ commands.
Garcia explained, “Officers observed the firearm fall from the vehicle and instructed him not to retrieve it. But he tried to do so, leading the officer to fire.” It’s quite tragic, really—one might wonder what might have happened differently.
Reportedly, Lopez’s girlfriend, who is 19, and their one-year-old child were present in the car during the incident. It’s hard to fathom what they went through as the altercation unfolded.
The shooting was triggered around 10:30 p.m. when an officer attempted to stop Lopez’s vehicle near East 4th Avenue and French Street. There was a brief pursuit prior to him pulling into the parking lot, but details regarding any prior engagement with law enforcement remain unclear.
The teenager was declared dead at the scene, raising numerous questions about how such situations escalate so quickly. It leaves you thinking—could there have been a way to de-escalate what ultimately turned tragic?
