Federal charges have been filed against a man for allegedly spraying a liquid on Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar during a town hall event this week. The individual, Anthony James Kazmierciak, 55, has been accused of “forcibly assaulting, opposing, obstructing, [and] threatening” Omar, as outlined in a criminal complaint submitted to the U.S. District Court for Minnesota. This case is being overseen by Magistrate Judge Darci J. Foster and was initiated by the Minnesota Department of Justice.
Interestingly, right before the incident, Omar had called for the resignation or impeachment of Kristi Noem, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, which followed several fatal shootings by federal immigration agents in the Minneapolis area.
Kazmierciak, who has a history of two prior drunk driving offenses, is also facing state-level charges of third-degree assault and was booked into the Hennepin County Jail.
The complaint mentions that Kazmierciak allegedly used a syringe to spray the substance on Omar, which has been identified as a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar. After the incident, a hazardous materials expert assessed the syringe on site, confirming the composition of the liquid.
The situation escalated further when the police reviewed body camera footage from Kazmierciak’s arrest. It revealed that he made statements suggesting he had thrown vinegar at Omar.
Adding another layer, an FBI agent later interviewed a close associate of Kazmierciak, who mentioned that he had once made disturbing comments about Omar, suggesting that someone should “kill that guy,” referring to her.
