Trump Nominates Kevin Warsh to Replace Powell as Fed Chairman
President Trump has made his choice for the next Federal Reserve Chairman, nominating Kevin Warsh to take over from Jerome Powell. Warsh, who has a wealth of experience and previously served on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, was noted by Trump as the youngest appointee to the board when he joined in 2006 at age 35.
The announcement follows a long-standing conflict between Powell and Trump, described by the president as “skull-numbing.” Warsh is set to officially step into the role in May, following the conclusion of Powell’s term.
Trump expressed confidence in Warsh’s ability, stating, “I’ve known Kevin for a long time, and I have no doubt that he will go down as one of the great Fed chairs, perhaps one of the best.” He emphasized Warsh’s reliability and core casting in a recent Truth Social post.
Interestingly, this announcement arrives amidst personal conflicts, with tensions running high between Trump and Powell, particularly over interest rate decisions. Powell’s hesitation to lower rates has fueled criticism from the president. The situation escalated further when the Justice Department began a criminal investigation into Powell based on his testimony regarding rising renovation costs at the Fed’s headquarters.
After receiving a subpoena, Powell stated that the situation reflected a political issue surrounding whether the Fed could operate independently or would be swayed by political pressures.
Initially, Trump had considered Kevin Hassett for the National Economic Council but ultimately decided to keep him in his current position, citing his commendable work with the team. Referring to Hassett, Trump said, “He would have been a great chairman, but he’s doing a fantastic job, and I didn’t want to let him go.”
