House Speaker Calls for GOP Unity Behind Trump After Funding Agreement
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) urged fellow Republicans to unify in support of President Donald Trump following a recently reached agreement with Senate Democrats to avert a potential government shutdown, as reported on Friday evening.
Although Johnson expressed frustration over the situation, he recognized Trump’s knack for building consensus and encouraged lawmakers to back the president’s approach.
On the same day, the Senate passed a modified funding plan that allocates federal funding, excluding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), until the fiscal year ends on September 30.
This decision came after Democrats stepped back from a bipartisan effort to fully fund the government, pointing to stricter requirements for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) than what the House had initially proposed.
Earlier this week, Johnson met with Trump at the White House, reinforcing the need to adhere to the original plan. He cautioned House Republicans that altering it could lead to unforeseen complications.
Despite these concerns, Trump went ahead with negotiations with Senate Democrats. Johnson was quoted as saying, “the president is calling the shots, and we need to support him,” acknowledging the complexities of the situation.
The initial bipartisan DHS bill included guidelines for ICE, such as mandating body cameras and training for public engagement and de-escalation. However, following incidents where federal law enforcement confronted demonstrators protesting Trump’s immigration policy, Democrats are now insisting on more stringent conditions.
The new agreement would extend current DHS funding levels for two weeks to ensure other essential departments under its purview remain funded while bipartisan discussions on immigration enforcement continue.
Some Republican lawmakers have voiced their worries, arguing that this deal could allow Democrats to undermine the administration’s authority.
During an internal call, one House Republican expressed concern, highlighting that while the deal is frustrating, it’s necessary to recognize Trump’s political skill. Johnson reiterated the need for Republican backing to navigate the next two weeks of negotiations.
Trump commented on the bipartisan efforts, emphasizing that both sides need to work together to secure funding throughout the government while also ensuring vital resources for the Coast Guard and DHS.
Johnson remains hopeful that Republicans can influence the negotiations, noting that while agencies like the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) might face budget constraints, ICE’s funding is secure under Trump’s legislation.
The House plans to address the funding bill by Monday evening.
