New Jersey Governor Announces ICE Activity Reporting Portal

New Jersey’s Governor, Mikie Sherrill, revealed that the state will launch a new portal for residents to upload photos and videos of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents while they are on duty. This announcement was made during her appearance on “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central.

“If you see an ICE agent out there, take out your phone and let us know,” Sherrill urged the audience. She emphasized that the agents do not openly communicate their actions or the legal status of the individuals they detain, which raises concerns. In fact, she mentioned incidents where American citizens, including a young child, have been apprehended without explanation.

Sherrill’s administration plans to provide New Jerseyans with crucial information about their rights and to further promote safety in the state. According to her press secretary, Sean Higgins, the governor will announce more details in the coming days, emphasizing that keeping residents safe is a top priority.

Interestingly, this development follows similar initiatives in neighboring states. New York’s Attorney General Letitia James introduced a similar portal in October, aiming to monitor any unlawful actions by ICE agents. California has also implemented a system for residents to report potential misconduct by immigration officers.

The urgency of these measures comes on the heels of troubling incidents involving federal immigration agents in Minneapolis. Recently, two American citizens were killed by ICE and Border Patrol agents, events that shook the local community and triggered nationwide protests. Witnesses described one victim, Alex Preti, an ICU nurse, trying to assist a woman during an immigration operation when he was shot by agents.

Sherrill’s comments also drew parallels to her experiences in the Navy, where she observed covert law enforcement actions in other countries. The governor reiterated the need for transparency and accountability, as efforts continue in Congress and state legislatures to prevent immigration officials from disguising their identities.
