Leftist allies criticize AOC for following Pelosi's lead after 'Squad' member supports another moderate Democrat for the midterms

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, associated with the Socialist Party, has backed a second moderate Democrat in just ten days as the midterm elections approach. This has sparked frustration among some members of the Democratic Socialists of America, who feel she is mirroring the trajectory of Nancy Pelosi.

During a recent debate, a DSA politician criticized AOC, suggesting she is a careerist, much like Nancy Pelosi—who, despite once supporting universal healthcare, gradually moved toward a more centrist approach throughout her lengthy political career.

Critics have voiced their displeasure over AOC endorsing yet another moderate, drawing comparisons to Pelosi’s shift to centrist politics. They argue that AOC’s recent actions suggest she may be following in those same footsteps.

AOC’s endorsement of Rep. Julie Johnson (D-TX) in a tightly contested race for the modified 33rd District in Dallas has been particularly divisive. This endorsement came shortly after her support for gun advocate Mary Peltola, who is running for a Senate seat in Alaska.

In a video statement, Ocasio-Cortez emphasized that it’s crucial to prevent Republican gerrymandering from pushing out strong Democratic representatives. She highlighted Johnson’s dedication to battling ICE overreach and fighting against what she referred to as “MAGA extremism.” AOC expressed her hope that others would support Johnson’s campaign too.

However, Johnson’s track record—especially her recent vote for military aid to Israel—has led some within the national DSA to scrutinize AOC’s allegiance, questioning whether she has violated the party’s stance on Zionism, which could lead to calls for her expulsion.

Moreover, Johnson faces allegations concerning her investments in AI company Palantir, which has been involved in controversial actions regarding immigration enforcement during the Trump administration.

Some angry DSA members speculate that AOC is moving towards centrist alliances to position herself favorably for future elections, believing she might be following advice from campaign strategists.

One DSA attendee articulated that this path could lead AOC to seek higher positions, possibly even eyeing the presidency or aligning with established party leaders like Chuck Schumer.

Meanwhile, the national DSA has withdrawn its endorsement of AOC for 2024 due to her vote affirming Israel’s right to exist, although she continues to receive backing from the local New York chapter.

Political analysts suggest that AOC’s recent moves might be strategic, aimed at solidifying her influence within party ranks. One political scientist noted that she seems to be prioritizing party unity over ideology, marking a shift towards a more moderate stance.

Johnson is set to compete against former Congressman Colin Allred (D-TX) in the upcoming March 3 primary, where polling indicates she is trailing significantly behind.
