Woke 2 revival announced following Trump's election win

Rebirth of Activism Amidst Political Tensions

Vanity Fair has suggested that a fresh wave of “woke” activism is emerging, characterized by a more assertive response to the Trump administration. The publication notes that while many voters pushed back against progressive ideals in the 2024 elections, a renewed sense of activism is palpable under the label “Woke 2.”

This new phase is depicted as a shift away from virtual outrage and toward tangible action. As the magazine describes, it seems to react to Donald Trump’s anticipated return to power.

“If Woke 1 can be seen as a reaction in the 2010s to counter racism, sexism, and homophobia through social media platforms,” writes Erin Vanderhoof of Vanity Fair, “Woke 2 is something altogether different.”

In this article, she highlights a noticeable increase in protests across various cities, particularly in Minneapolis and Portland. The mobilization surrounding immigration enforcement in Minneapolis, for instance, has drawn parallels to the uproar that followed George Floyd’s death in 2020.

Vanderhoof observes that the resurgence is marked by a sense of community, with groups banding together to challenge federal immigration tactics, showcasing a mix of confidence, empathy, and a bold approach. “From the frog-costumed protests in Portland to acts of civil disobedience, Woke 2 is responding to direct challenges from the Trump era,” she elaborates.

However, this resurgence of wokeness carries a tone that some deem darker, especially following recent deadly incidents involving federal agents in Minneapolis. Even humorous takes on the “woke” culture seem to reflect a more aggressive attitude this time around.

Commentators and influencers are starting to embrace the “Woke 2” identity rather than shying away from it, a shift noted in the article. This aligns with conservative voices warning that the influence of “woke” culture hasn’t truly faded.

For instance, New York Post columnist Ricky Schrott pointed out that despite appearances—like the rapid removal of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) departments—woke culture remains very much alive, ready to make a comeback.

Vanderhoof also mentions the rise in contentious discussions on college campuses and the election of New York City’s Mayor Zoran Mamdani as indicators of this ongoing transformation.
