Protests against ICE in Milan prior to Winter Olympics concerning agent deployment plans

Protests Erupt in Milan Ahead of Winter Olympics

Demonstrations against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) made their way to Milan as anticipation builds for next week’s Winter Olympics. On Saturday, hundreds gathered in Aprile XXV Square in reaction to the announcement that ICE agents will be present during the games. U.S. Embassy officials clarified that while ICE will support diplomatic security, they won’t be involved in immigration enforcement.

The Department of Homeland Security reaffirmed, stating, “ICE does not conduct immigration enforcement operations in foreign countries.”

Still, this assurance didn’t quell the protests. Banners reading, “From Minnesota to the world, standing with those fighting for human rights, no thank you,” were seen among the demonstrators, with some others insisting, “Ice cream only comes with a spritz.”

Milan’s Mayor, Giuseppe Sala, expressed his opposition to ICE’s involvement, using examples of undercover operations in Minneapolis that contributed to his stance. “This is a paramilitary group that kills people,” he said on RTL Radio 102, emphasizing that ICE is not welcome in the city, which will host most Olympic events starting February 6th.

Interestingly, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi mentioned he wasn’t aware of ICE’s role in the Olympics, adding, “We don’t know what the problem will be,” which adds a layer of uncertainty to the situation.

As the excitement for the Olympics grows, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are expected to attend the opening ceremony.
