President Donald Trump has stated that the U.S. cannot disclose military strategies to Gulf allies while negotiating with Iran, despite a significant naval presence in the region.
In an interview with Fox News Channel’s Jackie Heinrich, Trump addressed concerns that Gulf allies are unaware of potential U.S. intervention regarding Iran.
This announcement coincides with Trump’s consideration of military options amidst ongoing protests and governmental crackdowns in Iran.
Some experts have suggested that Trump’s remarks during a recent press conference might serve as a “deception campaign” in light of the protest activity.
“I can’t share our plan—it could be just as detrimental as, well, if I told you. Here’s the gist: If talks don’t progress, we’ll see what comes next,” Trump commented. He also noted that naval deployments are larger now than they were for the situation in Venezuela.
Earlier this week, Trump revealed that a “massive armada,” headed by the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, is en route to Iran.
A senior official from a Gulf nation informed Fox News that Saudi Arabia is unlikely to permit the U.S. to utilize its airspace or bases for any strikes. Additionally, a representative from the Gulf Cooperation Council mentioned that the U.S. does not share its objectives concerning Iran with Gulf partners, although high-ranking Saudi officials in Washington have requested clarity.
While Gulf allies recognize Iran’s calls for negotiations, there is skepticism regarding the likelihood of reaching a substantive agreement.
He emphasized past negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program, stating, “The last round didn’t yield positive results. We had to address the issue differently, so let’s see how this plays out.” Trump also brought up government funding issues, suggesting that if talks falter, it would be due to Democratic actions.
“I think we’re making progress. GDP was strong, but we’ve seen some decline due to the last shutdown,” he noted. “This situation isn’t favorable for the nation, and I hope people make wise decisions.”
When asked about Democratic proposals concerning Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) funding, Trump refrained from commenting, citing past remarks regarding Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.
He concluded, “Now isn’t the right time for me to discuss that. But I want to say that crime rates are at historically low levels. Since the early 1900s… we’ve successfully reduced criminal activity and lowered rates of severe crimes.”
