Tensions in Los Angeles as Activists Overlook Requests for Calm Demonstrations

Protests in Los Angeles Lead to Arrests Amid Violence

On Friday, Los Angeles police detained several individuals after protesters disregarded dispersal orders, engaging in violent confrontations and using rocks and bottles against officers during an anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protest labeled a “national shutdown.”

In the afternoon, thousands assembled near City Hall before marching towards a federal detention facility in downtown. There, reports indicated that rioters obstructed access by building makeshift barricades at the loading dock.

The Central Division of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) posted footage of the unrest on social media, showing chaotic scenes at the loading dock.

“We hoped today’s demonstration would be peaceful, but the actions of some violent instigators compelled us to call for LAPD intervention,” the department stated.

The LAPD issued a dispersal order at around 5:45 p.m., but many protesters chose to stay. As tensions escalated into the evening, some agitators reportedly hurled objects at both law enforcement and federal employees. Authorities responded with tear gas and pepper balls.

Reports mentioned that “protesters are actively fighting with officers after multiple dispersal orders are issued.” The Metropolitan Division was deployed to the scene. Due to the danger posed to officers, lethal force was not authorized.

As the group moved through downtown, they set a trash can ablaze. Firefighters attempting to respond were reportedly compelled to withdraw as the fire continued.

In response to the situation, riot control units from the LAPD formed to push back the crowd.

According to reports, Mayor Karen Bass indicated during a press conference on Friday evening that five individuals were arrested, although the LAPD did not immediately verify this figure. One of the arrested individuals was said to have fired objects at officers using a slingshot.

This unrest coincided with nationwide protests. The group, reportedly planning additional demonstrations, called for “ICE Out of Everywhere” protests aimed at opposing ICE’s deportation efforts.

Despite claiming to promote a peaceful movement, the group’s statements have come under scrutiny in light of recent events, including the shootings of Alex Preti and Renee Good by federal agents in Minneapolis.

During her conference, Bass emphasized the importance of peaceful protests. “I think protests are crucial, but we must ensure they remain non-violent to prevent vandalism,” she noted. “We will not influence the administration in any meaningful way.”

Bass expressed concern that the Trump administration might exploit such violence to justify a heavier federal presence in Los Angeles. “Don’t be surprised if military forces return to our cities,” she warned.

She continued to suggest the administration was seeking justifications for increased intervention.
