Iran’s Supreme Leader Issues Warning Amid Rising Tensions
On Sunday, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, cautioned that any military action from the United States could ignite a “regional war” in the Middle East. This statement comes amid increasing tensions following President Donald Trump’s threats against Iran, particularly after the tumultuous protests across Iran.
Khamenei’s comments mark the most pronounced warning he has issued thus far. This comes as the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln and other American warships are stationed in the Arabian Sea—a move by President Trump in response to Iran’s violent suppression of widespread protests.
It’s still uncertain whether Trump plans to resort to military force. He emphasized that Iran seeks negotiations and cited the nation’s nuclear ambitions as another concern he wishes to address.
While Khamenei labeled the recent protests a “coup,” reinforcing a tougher stance, reports indicate that tens of thousands have been detained since the demonstrations commenced. In Iran, charges of incitement can carry severe consequences, raising fears of potential mass executions of those captured.
Additionally, Iran conducted live-fire military exercises this past Sunday and Monday near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil trade passes. U.S. Central Command warned not to threaten American vessels or disrupt commercial traffic during these drills.
Khamenei’s Direct Warning
Iranian state television reported Khamenei’s message, which stated: “Americans should know that if they start a war, it will become a regional war.” He emphasized that while Iran does not seek conflict, any aggression directed at the country will be met decisively.
Khamenei, who had previously acknowledged that some protestors had genuine economic concerns, has now hardened his rhetoric. These protests, which started in late December over the economic collapse in Iran, escalated into a broader challenge to Khamenei’s authority.
He described the uprising as a coup attempt that was effectively quelled, adding that the intentions behind it were to dismantle key governmental operations, which included attacks on police and other state centers.
EU Forces Labeled as Terrorists
In another development, Iran’s parliament speaker declared all EU forces as terrorist groups, following the EU’s designation of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guards as terrorists due to a violent crackdown on protests. This response seems largely symbolic, similar to Iran’s earlier reciprocal designation of U.S. military forces.
The speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, along with other parliament members, showed solidarity with the Guards by appearing in their uniforms. He stated that the EU’s actions undermine their own interests, demonstrating obedience to U.S. directives.
Congress members present at the meeting loudly chanted slogans against the U.S. and Israel.
Trump Addresses Iran Negotiations
President Trump has laid out his criteria for military action against Iran, which includes the potential killing of peaceful protestors or mass executions during the ongoing governmental crackdown. He has also indicated that discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear program are underway, with dialogue having taken place prior to Israel’s military actions against Iran in June.
During the conflict, the U.S. targeted several of Iran’s nuclear sites, and indications are that Iran may be trying to obscure activities from surveillance.
Trump has avoided providing clear answers about his plans for dealing with Iran, recently suggesting that opinions vary on whether stepping back from military threats might embolden the country or not.
He believes that Iran should pursue a favorable agreement that prevents them from obtaining nuclear weapons, noting that while talks are serious, he is uncertain of their commitment. Meanwhile, the Iranian security official Ali Larijani mentioned ongoing progress regarding negotiation frameworks, despite Khamenei’s consistent denials of any direct conversations with the U.S.
