White House Press Secretary Criticizes Senator’s Stance on Fed Chairman Nomination
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt has accused Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) of putting the United States in a precarious position. She claims he is essentially “holding our country hostage” by refusing to support President Donald Trump’s choice for a new Federal Reserve chairman until an ongoing investigation into the current chairman, Jerome Powell, is wrapped up.
On a recent segment of “Sunday Morning Futures,” Levitt expressed her frustration: “I just don’t think a sitting senator should jeopardize our entire economy because of political disagreements tied to an investigation led by the Department of Justice.”
Trump Backs Investigation
President Trump has stated he appreciates the Justice Department’s inquiry into Powell, but he added that it seems like retaliation, though he can’t control how it appears.
Levitt praised Trump’s nominee, Kevin Warsh, describing him as “a very qualified, excellent economist with a very distinguished background.” However, Tillis takes issue not with Warsh’s credentials but with the investigation itself. He noted on social media that the DOJ is conducting what he believes to be a misguided criminal inquiry into Powell, based on testimony that he argues lacks any indication of criminal intent.
In response to these developments, Tillis has declared, “I will oppose confirmation of any Fed nominee, including the chairman position, until the Justice Department’s investigation into Chairman Powell is fully and transparently resolved.”
Jerome Powell has been at the helm of the Federal Reserve since Trump appointed him in 2017, and the Justice Department is specifically looking into whether Powell misled Congress regarding a $2.5 billion renovation of the Fed’s headquarters.
Interestingly, while the investigation doesn’t directly relate to Powell’s role as Fed chair, many lawmakers, spanning both parties, view it as a tactic for Trump to apply pressure on Powell to reduce interest rates. Trump has often called for lower rates, but Powell has emphasized the importance of maintaining the Federal Reserve’s independence.
The Fed’s main objective is to ensure financial stability by controlling the money supply and managing credit conditions to tackle inflation and boost employment. Powell has reiterated that its mission must remain distinct from the political motivations of any administration.
