Savannah Guthrie Steps Back from Hosting Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony Amid Family Crisis
NBC’s Savannah Guthrie will not host the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics this week due to the ongoing search for her missing mother, Nancy Guthrie.
Nancy, who is 84 years old, was last seen at her home in Arizona on Saturday evening. Her family reported her missing around noon on Sunday, according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.
It was confirmed that Savannah, who co-hosts “Today,” has pulled out of her role for the ceremony scheduled for this Friday, a change that comes as the 2026 Winter Olympics take place in Milan from February 6 to February 22.
At a press conference on Monday, Nanos described Nancy’s home as a crime scene and emphasized that she did not leave voluntarily. “Now that we have processed that crime scene, we believe that there is indeed a crime scene and that there was indeed a crime,” Nanos explained. “She didn’t leave on her own. We know that.”
According to Nanos, Nancy was in good mental health but faced physical challenges that affected her mobility. Family members learned of her absence from a church official who had called to say she had not attended services. They attempted to locate her before dialing 911.
The sheriff’s office has not ruled out foul play, and the investigation has escalated to involve the department’s criminal investigation division.
NBC has yet to comment on the situation.
