Police Search for Missing Mother of NBC Host
A search is currently underway for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, who was reported missing on Saturday from Tucson’s Catalina Foothills. Authorities discovered signs suggesting a violent struggle at her home on Sunday morning after family members expressed concerns about her disappearance.
Nancy’s daughter, Savannah Guthrie, is well-known as a co-anchor for NBC’s “Today” show.
Law enforcement is prioritizing this case. Nancy was last seen Saturday evening, and following a thorough investigation of her home, officials indicated they found several “concerning” items.
“Based on our examination, we are convinced there has been a crime,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos stated at a press conference. “She did not leave on her own, that much we know.”
Nanos characterized the situation as suspicious, emphasizing Nancy’s mental clarity.
“Nancy Guthrie is in full command of her faculties. This is not related to dementia; she is very alert,” he added. “The family wants to communicate that this isn’t just a case of someone wandering off.”
However, Nanos also mentioned the importance of daily medication, noting that failing to take it could have serious consequences.
Initially, the incident was treated as a search-and-rescue operation. Teams comprising volunteers, search dogs, Border Patrol agents, and helicopters were deployed overnight. Unfortunately, the active search has since been paused due to a lack of leads.
Time is critical in Nancy’s case. Police have reiterated that although she is mentally fit, her “very limited mobility” and need for medication make her situation urgent.
A statement from Savannah was read on Monday’s “Today” show, in which the family expressed their gratitude for the support received.
“We deeply appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers,” the statement said. “Right now, our main focus is on bringing our beloved mother home safely. We value the efforts of law enforcement and urge anyone with information to reach out to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.”
This is breaking news. Please stay tuned for further updates.
