Nancy, Savannah Guthrie's mother, may have been abducted in Arizona

Tucson, Arizona

Authorities in Arizona are investigating the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC’s Today co-host Savannah Guthrie. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department reports that she was last seen Saturday night at her home near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue in north Tucson.

According to a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, Chris Nanos, investigators suspect that a crime has occurred. He mentioned that, at this stage, they believe Nancy was taken from her home against her will, possibly indicating kidnapping.

Her family alerted the authorities around noon on Sunday when she didn’t arrive for church. Sheriff Nanos expressed serious concerns, noting that Nancy is in poor health. He added that the situation at her residence also raised alarms for the investigators.

“This is very concerning for us,” he remarked. “We typically don’t have the sheriff on the scene for situations like this, but what we’re uncovering from the home is troubling.” Nanos indicated that a homicide team is present to monitor developments.

By Monday, Nanos confirmed that investigators had identified a crime scene at Nancy’s home, concluding that she did not leave voluntarily.

Authorities initially initiated a search-and-rescue effort for Nancy, but Nanos later clarified this was now defined more as a crime scene investigation rather than a rescue operation. He did mention that Nancy has a physical condition affecting her mobility and needs medication that could become dangerous if not taken within a 24-hour window.

In a message to NBC’s Today, Savannah Guthrie expressed gratitude toward law enforcement and called on the public for assistance in locating her mother. She highlighted that their primary concern is the safe return of Nancy.

“We appreciate the efforts of law enforcement in this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department,” Savannah’s statement concluded.
