Vatican Asks for Giorgia Meloni's Image to be Removed from Angel in Renovated Fresco

An Angelic Controversy In Rome

A portrait of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, recently added to a restored statue of an angel in a Roman church, is set to be removed at the request of the Vatican, as reported by La Repubblica.

St. Lawrence Cathedral in Lucina has found itself at the center of a debate since its remodeling. One of two angels flanking a marble bust of Umberto II, Italy’s last king, has reportedly been restored to resemble Meloni.

This issue first emerged in La Repubblica and other Italian media, prompting an investigation by the Diocese of Rome along with Italy’s Minister of Culture over the weekend.

Pastor Daniele Micheletti acknowledged the resemblance to Meloni but downplayed its importance, suggesting that artists often depict real individuals. The cathedral, situated just below the Spanish Steps, falls under the care of the Italian Ministry of the Interior. It was noted that the church had drawn crowds eager to capture photos of the controversial restoration on Sunday and Monday.

According to Italian Sky TG24, the Vatican requested the removal of the portrait, emphasizing that “sacred art and images of the Christian tradition are intended solely to support liturgical life and cannot be misused.”

La Repubblica also highlighted that the Italian Cultural Heritage Authority agreed, stressing the need for the original painting’s restoration.

Bruno Valentinetti, the artist behind the renovation, remarked, “Everyone sees what they want to see. If you’re happy with that, go ahead. It’s the face of an angel. Did I take inspiration from living people? No, they’re all dead.”

Monsignor Daniele Micheletti, the Cathedral’s Prefect, noted the resemblance as well, saying, “That’s the prime minister, what’s the problem? Those are souls in purgatory.” On Saturday, Meloni briefly addressed the situation on Instagram, posting a picture of the restored angel and humorously stating, “No, I don’t look like an angel at all,” alongside a laughing emoji.
