Russia launches over 70 missiles and 450 drones at Ukraine

Major Russian Attack Strikes Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reported on Tuesday that Russia launched a significant overnight assault on Ukraine’s energy facilities, employing an unprecedented number of ballistic missiles. This escalation came just a day before diplomatic discussions between the U.S. and Russia were set to continue in Abu Dhabi.

Zelenskiy detailed that the assault involved over 70 missiles—32 of which were ballistic and 28 cruise—with more than 450 drones targeting multiple regions, including Kiev, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Sumy, Vinnytsia, Odessa, and Zaporizhzhia.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine noted that five individuals sustained injuries, while three others were rescued following a drone strike that ignited a fire in a high-rise building in Kharkiv.

In a post on X, Zelenskiy suggested that the Russian military exploited a U.S. proposal to suspend attacks—potentially not out of goodwill for peace, but to accumulate weapons and bide their time until the coldest season, when temperatures across Ukraine could plunge below -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit).

Former President Donald Trump had previously stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin consented to pause strikes on Ukraine’s energy sector for a week, as subzero temperatures led to widespread power and heating failures.

Despite this, Russia resumed hostilities just days before the supposed ceasefire would conclude. In this brief period, they targeted a maternity ward in Zaporizhzhia and attacked a bus carrying Ukrainian miners, leading to a tragic toll of 12 lives lost.

As for the White House, they did not immediately reply to inquiries for comments on the situation.

On Monday night, many Kiev residents sought refuge in subway stations as air raid sirens echoed throughout the city. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko criticized these attacks, asserting that Russia was deliberately trying to leave hundreds of thousands—including vulnerable groups like children and the elderly—without essential heat or electricity as temperatures dipped to -25 degrees Celsius (-13 degrees Fahrenheit).

According to Sviridenko, this tactic seemingly aims to freeze civilians into submission. He did acknowledge that Ukraine’s air defense successfully intercepted a majority of the incoming missiles and drones.

Zelenskiy further indicated that the negotiating team would adjust its strategies as Ukraine prepares to meet again with U.S. and Russian representatives in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday and Thursday.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff met Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev in Florida on Saturday, describing the talks as constructive notwithstanding ongoing military escalations in Ukraine. He expressed optimism and gratitude for U.S. leadership in pursuing long-term peace.
