Tragic Collision Claims Lives in Aegean Sea

A tragic incident off the coast of Chios resulted in at least 15 fatalities when a speedboat carrying migrants collided with a Greek coast guard patrol boat, according to the coast guard on Tuesday. They reported ongoing search and rescue operations involving patrol boats, helicopters, and divers for those who might still be missing.

As part of the response, 14 bodies—11 men and three women—were recovered, while two injured coast guard personnel and 25 migrants, including roughly 11 children, were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, one of the injured women later succumbed to her injuries in the hospital, raising the death toll to at least 15.

The exact number of passengers on the speedboat isn’t clear yet, but search operations are actively looking for any additional missing individuals. Various vessels, including four patrol boats and an Air Force helicopter, are involved in these efforts.

Local news footage captured the harrowing moments as responders assisted individuals onto a waiting coast guard vehicle. At least one person was seen being carried from a nearby boat wrapped in a blanket, while others helped guide children, one of whom appeared to be limping.

Details surrounding the cause of the collision remain unclear, and the coast guard has yet to release further information.

Michalis Giannakos, the head of Greece’s public hospital union, indicated that the hospital staff on Chios were on high alert due to the sudden increase in injured individuals and were prepared for the possibility of more patients. Some of the injured will need surgical intervention, he noted in an interview with Greece’s Open TV channel.

Greece serves as a key entry point into the European Union for those escaping conflict and hardship in regions like the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

Incidents like this are regrettably common. Many individuals attempt the perilous journey across the short stretch from the Turkish coast to the Greek islands in the eastern Aegean Sea.

Nevertheless, the frequency of these crossings has declined due to heightened patrols and claims of resistance from Greek authorities regarding asylum requests.

In line with other European Union nations, Greece has implemented stricter immigration policies.

Recently, the EU initiated a comprehensive reform of its immigration system aimed at expediting deportations and bolstering detention measures.

Immigration continues to be a contentious topic within EU member states. Over the last decade, as the number of asylum seekers surged, public discourse has evolved, and far-right political factions have gained influence.

As a result, EU migration regulations have tightened, leading to a decrease in the number of individuals seeking asylum compared to previous record levels.
