Life Sentence for Attempted Assassination of Trump
Ryan Routh has been sentenced to life in prison, plus an additional seven years, for his attempt to assassinate Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign at a golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida.
This sentencing followed Routh’s conviction last September on five federal charges, which included the attempted assassination of a leading presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, and multiple firearms offenses.
While prosecutors pushed for a life sentence, Routh’s attorney, Martin Ross, had asked for a lesser sentence of 20 years in prison, alongside another 20 years for one of the firearm charges.
The sentencing, initially set for December, was postponed by U.S. District Judge Eileen Cannon after Routh chose to engage an attorney for the sentencing phase, instead of continuing to represent himself as he had during much of the trial.
In detailing the case, prosecutors stated that Routh planned for weeks to attack Trump on September 15, 2024, while Trump was golfing. At one point, he pointed a rifle at a shrub nearby.
During the trial, a Secret Service agent, who was overseeing Trump’s protection at the golf course, shared that he saw Routh before Trump arrived. When Routh aimed his rifle at the agent, the agent returned fire, causing Routh to drop the weapon and flee without firing a shot.
