Ryan Routh Sentenced to Life for Attempted Assassination of Trump

Ryan Routh, who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump, received a life sentence on Wednesday, alongside an additional seven years for possessing a firearm during a violent crime, as reported by various outlets.

Judge Eileen Cannon addressed Routh directly, labeling his murder plot as “premeditated and evil.” She emphasized, “You are not a peaceful person. You are not a good person.”

In September, Routh was found guilty on multiple charges, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate and assault on a federal officer, following a trial that lasted 12 days in Florida. Upon hearing the verdict, he reacted violently, trying to stab himself with a pen.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi condemned Routh’s actions, stating, “His heinous assassination attempt on President Trump was not only an attack on the president but also on our entire democratic system.” She highlighted the collaborative efforts of the National Security Agency and prosecutors in ensuring Routh will remain imprisoned.

During the trial, Routh had legal representation, but he later made a request to act as his own lawyer for sentencing. His attorney indicated that factors like his age and mental health should lead to a lesser sentence of 27 years.

Defense filings criticized Routh’s previous legal counsel for ineffective representation and misleading the jury. Prosecutors argued for a life sentence, dismissing Routh’s claims as “meaningless.” They underscored the severity of his actions, stating, “Routh set out for months to assassinate a major presidential candidate and has shown no remorse.”

Routh’s attorney, Martin Ross, commented that part of their appeal will be based on Routh’s inability to fully grasp the federal rules of criminal procedure while representing himself. He voiced concern over Routh not being competent to defend his case effectively.

This continues to be a developing story.
