Amazon’s Ring Launches AI Feature to Help Find Missing Dogs

Amazon’s Ring has introduced a new AI-driven feature that scans neighborhood security camera footage to help find missing dogs, and it’s now accessible across the country, even for those who don’t own Ring devices.

This shift marks the first time Ring’s core function is available to non-customers, effectively broadening the company’s scope beyond just hardware users. It positions Ring as more of a community tool rather than merely a home security solution.

“Before search teams arrived, we were left to drive around the neighborhood calling out for our dog,” said Jamie Siminoff, the lead inventor of Ring. He explained that this new feature enables pet owners to enlist the support of their neighbors and their cameras for quicker recovery of lost pets.

Additionally, Ring is pledging $1 million to provide animal shelters across the U.S. with its camera systems. This initiative aims to help shelters better identify lost dogs and assist in reuniting them with their families.

Collaboration with organizations like Petco Love and Best Friends Animal Society is expected to extend the reach of this program, impacting thousands of shelters nationwide.

When a dog goes missing and is reported through the Ring app, community cameras leverage AI technology to identify animals similar to the missing pet. If a potential match is found, the camera owner receives an alert and can decide whether to share the footage with the pet’s owner.

Sharing video footage will be optional, allowing camera owners to make informed decisions about their privacy while aiding in the search for a lost pet.

Missing pets are among the most common reports made through Ring’s Neighbors app. Last year alone, there were over a million reports of lost and found pets on the platform, underscoring the significance of the issue this new feature aims to tackle.
