Democratic Congressman Jared Huffman Goes Barefoot on House Floor to Pay Tribute to Late Rock Star

California Rep. Honors Rock Legend Bobby Weir

On Wednesday, Democratic Rep. Jared Huffman of California took a unique approach to commemorate the late Bobby Weir, walking barefoot around the House chamber. Weir, the celebrated guitarist and songwriter from the Grateful Dead, passed away on January 10th at 78.

During the session, Huffman mentioned his intentions to honor Weir, delivering a heartfelt eulogy while barefoot. “Mr. Speaker, I rise to honor the extraordinary life and work of my constituent and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Bob Weir. Bob was more than just a musical icon. He was a neighbor, a friend, and a beloved member of our North Bay community,” Huffman expressed.

He made a point to highlight his bare feet during the address. “Mr. Speaker, please put it on record that I made this comment barefoot in honor of Bobby Weir. I think he would appreciate that,” Huffman stated.

The Speaker Pro Tempore reminded everyone to maintain proper etiquette on the floor. Still, Huffman continued to emphasize the impact Weir had on the local community in Marin, where he lived for decades, raised his family, and fostered a thriving music scene that many hold dear.

Huffman concluded with, “We send our love to his family, his friends, and all the dead around the world. And Mr. Speaker, let the record reflect that I made this statement barefoot in honor of Bob E. Weir, and I think he would appreciate that.”

Weir significantly influenced American music as a founding member of the Grateful Dead, reshaping live performances, fan culture, and artistic freedom. His family announced that he died from underlying lung disease, having recently overcome cancer.
