2026 Olympics opening ceremonies: What to anticipate on the first evening of the Milan Winter Games

2026 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony Preview

The 2024 Paris Olympics kicked off with a spectacular celebration, reflecting a distinctively French flair—think of the fashion, the cuisine, and yes, even a nod to a decapitated Marie Antoinette. Now, Italy is gearing up for the Milan-Cortina Games and, according to ceremony director Massimo Cantini Parrini, they are determined to fully embrace Italian culture in their presentation.

Beyond the anticipated parades and the iconic lighting of the cauldron, there’s a lot to look forward to at the 2026 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony.

While music is expected to take center stage, only a few performers have been confirmed thus far. The legendary tenor Andrea Bocelli is set to grace the event, along with pop icon Mariah Carey and Italian songstress Laura Pausini, known for her award-winning track. Future Life and rapper Ghali, who has ties to Milan through his Tunisian parents, are also on the lineup.

There are whispers of many more musical acts, but the organizing committee hasn’t revealed much as of now.

Participants will gather at the historic San Siro Stadium for the opening ceremony, but the showcase will span multiple venues, including Cortina d’Ampezzo, Predazzo, and Livigno. This marks a significant milestone as it will be the first time in Winter Olympics history to have an opening ceremony held across several locations.

The event will culminate with the lighting of the cauldron in two iconic spots: Milan’s Arco della Pace and Cortina’s Piazza Dibona.

San Siro, renowned globally as a legendary soccer venue, is nearing its end as a new stadium rises in its place. Serving as the home ground for AC Milan since 1926 and Inter Milan since 1947, it’s witnessed incredible matches and has drawn over 70,000 passionate fans.

Nothing is officially confirmed yet, but a true tribute to the stadium’s storied history is expected, with some of the biggest names from AC Milan and Inter Milan likely taking the stage.
