Ransom Demand Linked to Nancy Guthrie Investigation
According to the FBI’s Phoenix Division, Derrick Carrera is the individual accused of sending a ransom demand in relation to Nancy Guthrie. His image hasn’t been made public yet.
The 42-year-old from Hawthorne, California is facing criminal charges after he reportedly admitted to contacting his family following the release of a video indicating they were open to negotiations regarding his mother.
Authorities were able to trace messages sent to Guthrie’s daughter and son-in-law back to Carrera’s email, with records indicating these communications originated from a California residence.
Interestingly, court documents state that the ransom notes sent to various news organizations do not directly relate to the text messages from Carrera.
Earlier on Thursday, FBI Special Agent Heiss Janke announced an arrest in the case, although the suspect’s name hadn’t been disclosed yet. This individual is expected to make a court appearance later that same day.
“We have made one arrest in connection with the scammer’s ransom demands, and charges will be filed with a state judge later today,” Agent Janke mentioned.
He added, “My next message is to the scammers trying to exploit this situation. We will investigate and ensure you are held accountable.”
The ransom note circulated to three news outlets, including two local Tucson affiliates, while TMZ also received it and passed it on to authorities.
The initial ransom letter specifies a deadline of 5 PM on Thursday, with a follow-up deadline on Monday. The demand involves an undisclosed amount in millions—specifically in Bitcoin—for Nancy Guthrie’s safe return.
