The White House and conservative leaders are criticizing New Jersey’s Democratic Governor, Mikie Sherrill, for launching a portal aimed at monitoring U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Sherrill, a recent appointee and U.S. Navy veteran, encouraged residents to document any federal immigration enforcement they encounter.

On a recent show, she urged New Jersey residents to take photos or videos of ICE activities. “We want to know if you see an ICE agent on the street,” she stated, indicating that people could upload their footage as part of this initiative.

In response, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson remarked that New Jersey residents would likely be safer if Sherrill focused more on identifying illegal aliens rather than monitoring ICE agents. She criticized Sherrill’s approach, saying it undermines cooperation with law enforcement.

Jackson highlighted rising assaults against ICE agents, attributing these incidents to false narratives propagated by politicians. She mentioned a recent violent event involving a police officer and reiterated that ICE personnel play a crucial role in public safety.

Sherrill’s spokesperson, Sean Higgins, defended the governor’s actions, stating they are intended to protect the citizens of New Jersey from what he described as federal overreach. He asserted that ensuring safety is the governor’s primary concern and hinted at further measures to be announced by the acting attorney general.

During her commentary, Sherrill referenced fatalities linked to ICE enforcement, describing their actions as unacceptable and lacking transparency. She expressed concerns about ICE detaining individuals without clarity about their legal status.

The criticism of Sherrill was echoed by New Jersey Republican Leader John DiMaio, who claimed that the portal jeopardizes public safety and continues a troubling trend of undermining law enforcement. He argued that New Jersey’s policies have long hindered law enforcement efforts, allowing criminals to exploit gaps in the system.

DiMaio also emphasized recent ICE operations that targeted serious offenders, highlighting their contributions to public safety and urging leaders to promote respect for law enforcement rather than sow doubt.
