Clashes Erupt Outside New Jersey ICE Facility Amid Threats
Following praise from Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill for the peaceful protests outside New Jersey’s ICE facilities, the Justice Department announced its search for the individuals who threatened federal officers and their families.
In light of these threats, Sherrill urged “everyone, especially federal, state, and local government employees,” to “lower the temperature.”
An anti-ICE protester was filmed on Wednesday night making alarming threats, shouting, “I’m going to kill your whole family, I’m going to kill your kids, I’m going to kill your wife.” The individual even directed threats towards a specific officer’s mother.
U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche condemned these actions, stating, “This is a federal crime. Think about how abhorrent this person is, not just for threatening ICE officers but their families too.” He assured viewers that authorities will identify and apprehend the perpetrator. “Not only is it a crime to threaten law enforcement, but it is even worse to target their loved ones,” he noted.
Before the recent incidents, Sherrill remarked that there had been many peaceful protests lately, expressing continued support for them. However, she also claimed that “it’s actually the ICE agents who seem to be instigating a lot of the things.” She suggested that ICE agents should find a way to exit the scene, as their presence appeared to escalate tensions.
Discussing the threats against staff, Sherrill stated, “Threats of violence are unacceptable.” She identified herself as a military veteran committed to protecting the Constitution and acknowledged the severe conditions detainees are facing inside Delaney Hall. She emphasized the importance of ensuring peaceful protests and called on officials to help maintain safety and reduce tensions.
Demonstrations have persisted for several days, sparked by detainees at the facility who publicly claimed they weren’t being fed, lacked proper medical care, and couldn’t communicate with family members.
As protesters clashed with ICE agents outside Newark’s Delaney Hall, the situation escalated. Video footage revealed agitators wearing keffiyehs confronting officers and throwing various objects, including mattresses and large traffic cones—acting as makeshift shields—all in protest of the treatment of illegal immigrants in detention.
Officers responded by using batons and pepper spray, and, according to video evidence, even retaliating by hurling objects back at the crowd, including a wooden pallet.
Cheryl, a local resident, called for the closure of Delaney Hall after trying to access the facility on Memorial Day, but was turned away by authorities. Meanwhile, Sen. Andy Kim (D.N.J.) was permitted to oversee the facility’s conditions and described the situation as “unacceptable,” noting concerning details like milk cartons close to expiration.
