Keith Hernandez signs new contract to continue with SNY

SNY’s Mets Announcer Trio Will Continue

With spring training just around the corner, Keith Hernandez has reportedly finalized a three-year deal to stay in the broadcasting booth. This agreement is expected to be confirmed on Thursday, according to a report by Mike Puma.

Back in October, Hernandez expressed his desire for a longer contract during an interview with The Post’s Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman, stating he wasn’t quite ready to step away from his analyst role. “I’m not ready to retire,” he mentioned on “The Show” podcast. He humorously added that signing a three-year deal would make him 75 at the end of it, reflecting on his age—he just turned 72 and feels prepared for the challenge ahead.

Hernandez’s broadcasting journey began with the Mets at MSG, and he has been an integral part of SNY’s coverage since the 2006 season, alongside Gary Cohen and Ron Darling, who also used to be his teammate.

His work has not gone unnoticed; he’s received three Emmy Awards for his contributions to broadcasting. However, amidst his contract discussions, Hernandez has been vocal about some of the Mets’ roster changes during the offseason. He was taken aback when Pete Alonso signed with the Orioles, feeling “speechless” about the move. “This is very explosive,” he noted in a December appearance on SportsNite. “I don’t think I’ve seen a movement in a new direction like this in all the years I’ve been with the Mets.”

Hernandez highlighted the team’s strategy this offseason, suggesting a focus on pitching and defense, reminiscent of how the 1969 Mets achieved their World Series victory despite not having a powerful offense. “It’s going to be defense and pitching,” he asserted, drawing parallels to that championship team.

This offseason, the Mets have revamped their roster significantly, bringing in infielders Bo Bichette and Jorge Polanco, outfielder Eloy Jimenez, and a slate of pitchers including Freddy Peralta, Tobias Myers, Devin Williams, and Luke Weaver.
