Iran Seizes Two Oil Tankers in the Persian Gulf
On Thursday, Iran captured two foreign oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, detaining 15 crew members from various countries on suspicions of fuel smuggling. This incident occurs just ahead of crucial U.S.-Iran discussions in Oman planned for Friday.
The Iranian military, specifically the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) navy, announced that the vessels were intercepted near Farsi Island while reportedly carrying around 1 million liters of smuggled fuel, according to state media reports.
State media also indicated that the detained crew, totaling 15 foreigners, has been handed over to Iranian judicial officials.
The IRGC alleged that these ships were linked to an organized fuel smuggling operation believed to have been active in the region for several months.
Officials in Iran claimed that they were able to identify the vessels through intelligence surveillance, leading to their capture during a coordinated naval maneuver in this critical area for global energy supply.
Iranian authorities described this operation as a significant setback for illegal fuel trafficking but did not specify the nationality or the intended destination of the ships involved.
This seizure comes during a period of increased tensions and hostile rhetoric directed at the United States by Iranian officials.
Ezatollah Zarghami, a former Iranian minister, expressed strong concerns over potential violence in the Strait of Hormuz, a key passageway through which a large portion of the world’s oil is transported. He stated, “I am convinced that the Strait of Hormuz will become a place of genocide and hell for the United States.”
Zarghami further declared that Iran would assert its historical claim over the Strait while criticizing U.S. operations in the area.
He did not shy away from reiterating his threats, hinting at the strait becoming a potential “killing ground” for American forces, thus signaling Iran’s readiness to escalate tensions amid rising pressure in the region.
Meanwhile, U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are set to meet with Iranian representatives in Oman on Friday. They’re coming from two days of discussions in Abu Dhabi focused on the situations in Russia and Ukraine.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt confirmed that diplomatic discussions are ongoing, stating, “diplomacy happens all the time,” emphasizing that this approach remains the preferred option.
