Why Finnish skier Remi Lindholm is missing from the Winter Games after experiencing frostbite on his penis

Finland’s Remi Lindholm Injured, Will Miss Upcoming Olympics

A Finnish cross-country skier, Remi Lindholm, has been ruled out of this year’s Winter Olympics in Italy due to a serious injury sustained during training. This follows a peculiar incident during the last games where, amidst extreme cold, his penis froze during a race.

Lindholm, 28, suffered a hip injury in May that subsequently led to him being dropped from Finland’s Olympic lineup. The injury occurred while he was out training with friends, resulting in a stress fracture in his sacrum, which is situated between the hip bones in the lower back. “We ran a few races, and my back started hurting,” he recounted, expressing frustration over the setback.

His infamous freezing incident took place during a men’s 50km cross-country race in the mountains of China, where harsh temperatures forced the event to be shortened to 28km. On that day, temperatures plummeted to -9 degrees, with a wind chill that made it feel even colder. Lindholm described it as one of the toughest races he’d ever faced, finishing in 28th place out of 61 competitors.

He publicly addressed the surprising experience, sharing, “I think you can see which parts of my body were a little bit frozen when I finished…” The pain he felt after the race was intense, especially as warmth returned to his body. “After finishing, when every part of my body started to warm up, the pain was excruciating,” he noted.

Currently, Lindholm is dealing with the delays in his rehabilitation and will not be part of Finland’s 103-member delegation to the upcoming Olympics. The race is scheduled for February 21st at the Tessero cross-country ski stadium in Lago, Italy.

In related news, Alexander Bolshunov, the gold medalist from the previous Olympics, will also miss this year’s competition. His suspension from the International Olympic Committee followed Russia’s actions in Ukraine shortly after the Beijing Games concluded. Bolshunov’s request to compete as a neutral athlete was denied by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
