Protection for Border Patrol Officers Urged by Congressman
Representative Tony Gonzalez (R-Texas) is pushing for increased protections for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers as they collaborate with local and state law enforcement agencies.
In January, Gonzalez introduced the Homeland Threat Response Act. This legislation proposes changes to the Homeland Security Act of 2002, aiming to empower CBP in investigating violent acts, mass shootings, and other significant incidents, including large events.
He referred to specialized units like the Border Patrol Tactical Unit and the Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue team, which frequently assist local authorities—even in situations not linked to immigration.

Gonzalez expressed concern that CBP officers currently lack the same protections granted to other law enforcement personnel when they’re working outside their typical missions. “They are frequently called upon to work in areas that aren’t their primary focus,” he said.
According to Gonzalez, this legislation would ensure a fair standard of protection for these officers.
As the country prepares for several major sporting events, such as Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara, California, the need for CBP assistance may become critical. Other upcoming events also include FIFA World Cup matches in July, followed by the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Federal Immigration Officials Respond to Claims After Recent Shooting
Gonzalez highlighted the importance of CBP in maintaining safety, stating, “This group is what keeps us safe.” Border Patrol Special Operations Group teams have been involved in numerous high-profile incidents, including mass shootings and immigration-related crimes.
He noted that these teams are among the best-trained law enforcement personnel available. However, he also mentioned concerns about Democratic calls to defund the Department of Homeland Security, especially after controversies surrounding illegal immigration enforcement in states like Minnesota.
“We’re witnessing a trend where Democrats are yielding to the extreme left who seek to undermine law enforcement,” he remarked. “It’s crucial that federal employees in this sector don’t ponder ‘what if…’ and can instead concentrate on their missions.”
