Skier Hunter Hess criticized by 'Miracle on Ice' icon for disrespecting Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics

Olympic Hockey Star Critiques Skier’s Remarks

Mike Eruzione, the celebrated captain of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, recently expressed his disapproval of American skier Hunter Hess’s comments regarding the national anthem during a press event in Milan.

Hess, 27, made headlines on Friday when he shared that he felt “mixed feelings” about representing the United States at the Olympics. This perspective didn’t resonate well with Eruzione, who famously led the U.S. team to an iconic victory over Russia amid the Cold War.

Eruzione reacted by stating, “U.S. snowboarder Hunter Hess claims he doesn’t represent his country, but rather his family and friends. If that’s the case, maybe he shouldn’t don the U.S. uniform,” he noted in a tweet on Saturday.

His remarks highlight a broader sentiment; Eruzione commented, “Some athletes don’t understand that.” It’s clear that he feels strongly about the significance of national representation in sports.

Hess’s statements have stirred anger among many on social media, with some calling for a boycott of the upcoming Winter Olympics. Even Congressman Byron Donald weighed in, indicating that Hess’s comments were disrespectful to the country.

In his own response on social media, Donald remarked, “You chose to wear our flag. You chose to represent our country. If this is too challenging for you, maybe it’s time to reconsider your involvement. There are more pressing matters than politics.” It seems that many believe wearing the uniform carries more weight than Hess acknowledges.

Hess, who hails from Oregon, has been part of the U.S. national team since 2017. Yet he expressed his conflict, stating, “It’s a bit challenging. There’s a lot happening that I don’t particularly support, and I think many feel the same.” He added, “Just because I sport the flag doesn’t mean I endorse everything the U.S. stands for right now.”
