SANTA CLARA, Calif. — A proud moment for the 49ers as one of their former greats will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2026. One running back remains without this honor, while another is busy establishing his legacy for the future.
During the Super Bowl week in 2026, the Hall of Fame inductees were revealed, and Christian McCaffrey, who has already made his mark with four Pro Bowl selections and three first-team All-Pro honors, secured his place as a notable NFL returnee.
One can’t help but wonder—did he ever imagine reaching a point where he’d stand alongside Hall of Famer Roger Craig—and, perhaps by then, even the much-discussed Frank Gore?
“When you’re a kid dreaming of football, you picture the Super Bowl and that coveted gold jacket as the ultimate achievement,” McCaffrey reflected. “Honestly, I didn’t think I would even make it to the NFL—I wasn’t really meant to be here.”
He continued, “I can see my potential, but I truly admire players like Frank and Roger. They inspire me, regardless of their jackets. There are many who have transcended the sport, leaving a lasting legacy. Now with the 49ers, I believe both are entirely deserving of that gold jacket.”
On Saturday, McCaffrey joined an event at eBay’s EndZone, where he played a role in an auction that connected fans both in-store and virtually. “EBay has crafted a fantastic event here,” he mentioned. “I could chat about sports fashion endlessly. I wouldn’t label myself a collector per se, but I have a keen interest in cars, clothes, watches, hats—pretty much anything vintage. I enjoy a variety of items across each of those areas.”
This year’s Super Bowl took place at Levi’s Stadium, the 49ers’ home field, featuring the Seahawks, a key rival. It did put McCaffrey in a bit of a tricky spot.
Despite that, he had friends in attendance, including Sam Darnold, a former 49ers and Panthers teammate, who was vying for the MVP title that day.
“In the NFL, you never cheer for the other team,” McCaffrey said. “You want your team to be there, but it’s all about the relationships in the league too. I just want to witness some great football. Sure, it’s frustrating when your team isn’t playing, and you find yourself eagerly waiting for Monday.”
McCaffrey praised Darnold as a “lifelong friend,” saying, “He’s a person of great resilience and character. He never plays the blame game. Just seeing him overcome so much adversity has been inspiring; he has a unique process he trusts, and it’s wonderful watching him succeed.”
McCaffrey’s journey has also been marked by resilience. After missing 13 games in 2024 due to injuries, he bounced back in 2025 with an impressive 2,126 yards from scrimmage across all 17 games, ranking second in the league.
“I’m genuinely thankful for everyone who supported my comeback,” McCaffrey expressed. “It takes a community to achieve anything significant in this sport—my teammates, coaches, family, everyone who invested their time in my success. Recovering from injuries is tough, brimming with uncertainty. There were moments I grappled with thoughts echoing what you hear in the media. This offseason is one I’ll remember, not just for its challenges but for its duration; it felt endless.”
