Gunmen Attack Armored Vehicle on Italian Highway

On Monday, gunmen targeted an armored vehicle on National Highway 613, which connects Lecce and Brindisi, leading to intense clashes with Italian military police.

The attackers managed to intercept two armored trucks transporting cash and ignited them in an attempt to stop their progress. The Italian government responded, engaging in a gunfight as the criminals tried to make their escape.

Reports indicate that the assailants used explosives to breach the armored vehicle, attempting to access its valuables. The vehicles were owned by Gruppo Battistori, a firm specializing in secure transport of money and valuable items.

A video of the incident surfaced, first shared by Claudio Stefanazzi, a member of the Italian Democratic Party. It shows armed men surrounding the armored van, which exploded from the back.

In the footage, multiple masked individuals can be seen, some dressed in white overalls and armed with semi-automatic rifles.

Following the attack, the suspects fled while shooting at pursuing police vehicles, hitting a police car several times and colliding with an unmarked police vehicle.

Italian authorities reported that they have arrested three individuals in connection with the robbery and are actively searching for additional suspects. Fortunately, it appears that no one was injured during the incident.

Interestingly, the thieves belonged to a group known in the Foggiano area for similar armed heists, but they were ultimately unsuccessful in stealing anything from the vehicle.

As for the Carabinieri, they have yet to provide immediate comments about the situation.
