Left-wing podcaster Joy Reid recently criticized the Republican Party, suggesting they’ve turned rapper Nicki Minaj into a “house pet” to lend them some “cultural cool.” She claimed this reflects an expectation for Black individuals to align with leftist ideals, or else risk being seen as servile figures.
“There’s a reason the other side is offended by Nicki Minaj,” Reid stated during a recent segment of a show, attacking Minaj by asserting that Republicans “despise” and “don’t respect” her artistry.
“The reason they want to keep her close, almost in a submissive role, is because they feel a need for a Black figure to project cultural credibility,” Reid went on to say.
“Black culture has always been a powerful force in this country,” the 57-year-old added, pointing out other Black Republicans who have “left the scene” or lack popularity, as her co-hosts chuckled along.
Reid escalated her critique, calling Minaj “a Trinidadian who doesn’t care about local issues,” and described her as someone who prioritizes her status over the success of other women in the industry.
In her tirade, she expressed disdain for Minaj’s career trajectory compared to icons like Rihanna and Beyoncé, declaring, “She’ll never reach their level,” and implying that Minaj, as a rapper in her 40s, lacks genuine concern for Black issues.
Reid then made comments about Minaj’s declining cultural influence, suggesting that without that appeal, the Republicans would move on to other representatives.
Referring to Minaj’s fan base as “The Barbs,” she even performed a parody of one of Minaj’s past hits, dismissing her relevance with lines like, “Nicki ain’t saying nothing; her fans can’t change that reality.”
“While they might keep searching for Black figures to bolster their image, Reid emphasized that true cultural authenticity is what they’re after,” she remarked. “They know it’s essential to their strategy.”
Meanwhile, Minaj has publicly expressed support for President Trump on various issues, facing backlash from several left-leaning individuals for her diverging political views.
Despite this, many of Minaj’s supporters seem to be rallying behind her as she appears to consider a shift toward the Republican party on social media lately.
